PS3 Steps Up Its Online Game, Takes Cues From YouTube and MySpace1:45 pm | Wednesday, March 7th, 2007

Sony announces, via the New York Times, that it will be releasing some new online bells and whistles for its relatively lackluster PS3. The new generation game system did not do as well as originally expected (the $599 price tag, limited availability, and non-exclusive games certainly didn't help), and it looks like Sony is scrambling a bit to make it more relevant and create a more comprehensive online footprint. Dubbed PlayStation Home, Sony hopes to create a cyberspace community where gamers can share content they've created. They do that by:
[A]llowing users to create persisting online identities that record players' achievements in different games. As players progress through a game, they will unlock various virtual prizes that they can then show off to friends and rivals…
We defer to gamer experts Kotaku, who broke the story more then a week ago, for what this means to those of you who were lucky enough to grab yourselves a PS3 from Craigslist or eBay.
