ASU Doesn’t Want Students To Look At Boobies

tempe12_0110.jpg
We've always viewed college as a kind of wild, crazy, and liberal place where you're finally far enough away from the prying eyes of parents and authoritarian adults to actually grow up a bit and do what you want within reason. Well that's true as long as you're not headed to Arizona State University (ASU). Tempe12, a college oriented media, graphics, and modeling agency that makes super sexy swimsuit calendars using actual students, and also runs a website, was blackballed from the ASU program and the student applying for the internship was denied. Professor Michael Hinson, gatekeeper of the internship programs, claims that the Tempe12 opportunity is not inline with ASU's overall objectives, writing:

“The internship is hard to align with the strategic initiatives of our internship program. I realize this may be frustrating for both of you. [ASU Student], I’m sure you can find another internship. [Tempe12 owner], I’m also sure that you’re business will be successful… but trust me, this internship is not something we can add to our roster.”

When pressed why the Professor doesn't want Tempe12 to be part of the program, he cited an unsubstantiated rumor involving the company requiring its interns to attend ‘beer breakfasts,’ a claim that the group vehemently denies. “These rumors are unsubstantiated and false I don’t even know what a beer breakfast is,” says David Freedman, owner of Tempe12. His company produces and distributes over a half a million calendars for 21 college campuses and since its inception 3 years ago, has caught the attention of Entrepreneur Magazine, the Howard Stern Show, and other miscellaneous media outlets, making it a good place for college students to get some badly needed experience and credits.

Instead of just rephrasing the press release that landed in our inbox yesterday, we decided to do some hard hitting reporting and even go so far as emailing an actual somebody for a quote. We found Ben Leis, President of Tempe12, and dashed him off a few questions about this developing incident that we shall proudly label “Interngate,” for now, until we can find something a bit more tabloidy:

How many internships are usually filled via ASU?
We typically have 25 students apply each semester for 3 internships.

What will the company do without the extra college hands?
Sit around and cry.

Do you pay your interns?
As payment our interns receive benefits such as event tickets, clients products and services, discounts, etc. Sales interns receive a percentage commission of sales.

Is the Professor a Born Again Christian or something?
There is obviously an agenda at hand… I don’t think he likes women in swimwear (Ben then directed us to the scantily clad models on the website: Tempe12.com).

Although you say that Tempe12 never hosted 'beer breakfasts,' if you did, what beer and what cereal would you have suggested?
Corona Light, Budweiser and Bud Light kegs along with a nice spread of bagels, lox and cream cheese as well as an assortment of cereals ranging from Raisin Bran to Lucky Charms or the generic brand Marshmallow Matey's.

What do you suggest students do now that Tempe12 has been banned?
I suggest students complain and demand to work for whom they choose.

We called the professor but he never got back to us. So we leave it up to you college kids to email him, or hell, even call him 480.965.9311 and let him know that if students want to help make nudie calendars they should have the right to and credit for it. Oh, and tell him that daily beer breakfasts, if they did exist, should be something to look forward to, not dismissed.

This may not be politically correct, but I have a few theories. Since I currently take a class with professor Hinson, I can assure you he is an open minded nice person. From some of the things he has said in class he has disclosed that he comes from an overly conservative family to the point when sex becomes a topic in class, he is prone to blush. But, he also seems to have liberal views now.

Here’s what I think is going down. Michael Hinson wants to keep his job. The administration at ASU is headed by MORMONS. This area of country has been the epicenter of the LDS church since the 1880’s. When Brigham Young fled Nuavoo Illinois to Salt Lake City after the murder of John Smith, he led a rocky turbulent group whos faith in religion was compounded by their poor treatment. Mormons spread to Mexico and Canada when America tried to rid the area of palygamy. This means the strip of counrty including Idaho, Utah, and Arizona are home to generations of mormons. Even though the religion officially started in 1830, their beliefs lead them to have many many children. Therefore along with their mission work, it is the fastest growing religion in America.

Ira Fulton (fulton homes) has donated more money than any other alumni of ASU to Mr. Crow. Both are mormon. Take a look at what asu has become since crow became president, dry campus, dying if not dead greek system, an impersonal feel, hell I got kicked out of a baseball game for sitting in the wrong seats (stadium was empty) and they wonder why our student body is apathetic. I suggest googling names such as koetter, crow, and fulton with the word mormon or LDS next to them. Then take a look at prospective coach Norm Chow. There’s a lot out there. This is bigger than just an issue with Tempe12. It’s a travesty to watch an American symbol castrated before my eyes. It would be great to have mormons without mormonism.

Fact: the most fradulent place on earth is the state of Utah. The IRS is looking into cases from 50 – 100 million dollars at any given time. I wonder if this has anything to do with the fact that their religion is based on pretty much black magic.

Nip -you have got some issues that you need to have resolved and come to the realization that you have no idea what you are talking about. If you would like I would be glad to sit down with you and dispell the wrong information you have about my religon. As far as the girls in bikinis go I quote- A thing of beauty lasts forever, I have seen these calendars in the past and If these women choose to have pictures taken of them then that is up to them to decide. Personally I think they would look better if they were covered up a little more, but for the most part they look like they are beautiful women. It is up to the university to decide who and what they want to sponser if they said no then then have a good reason. If you would like to I would first recommend to you to go to the church’s website http://www.lds.org and see what they have to say. Don’t make assumptions about what you don’t know and from reading your post you don’t know much.

im glad that the issue of ASU denying my internship wit tempe12 has turned it religion talk…

  • mike December 7, 2006 at 3:59 pm

You obviously have not done all that much research on your religion. You probably only use the church website to do your research. I am sure that it is very unbais. The bigger issue is the fact that the people in charge of the university are forcing their religious views on everyone else indirectly. There is nothing wrong with students interning for Tempe 12. Who is to say that someone wont learn more working for a media company that does calenders of girls in swimsuits than a media company that does calenders of animals?

First, I’m LDS. Second, why do my fellow LDS members have to stick their nose into everything. If people want to run an internship for Tempe12 and it’s not breaking any federal or state laws….who cares!?

Some nice looking ladies in those pics :)

I think a majority of the LDS naysaying comes from the fact that the few LDS in the spotlight make us as a whole look like a bunch of hypocrites.

  • keithmerk December 19, 2006 at 3:44 pm

tL is correct! And mike I actually have done alot of research and that is one of the reasons I joined-cause I wasn’t a lifelong member. None of you seem to realize that all the internships are decided on by the board. Just because a company makes good money doesn’t mean that you can get an internship with them. for example McD’s is a huge money making business but if you told the board that you wanted to intern with them they would more then likely laugh at you. I also don’t think that any university would approve a internship with Playboy or most every hetero man going to college would want to get an internship there.
It’s not about religion regardless of what you may think. They have a set of standards for what they are looking for and it would seem to me that Tempe12 didn’t fit for whatever the reason.
If an individual wanted to find out exactly why the internship they requested was turned down then go to the board and get a direct answer. If they don’t have one then request it again and do some more research as to how this would benefit you in your studies. If you can prove to them how and why then they would have to approve your request. IF they do say it is just a question of morality and what they think is morally ethical then your stuck. But the article doesn’t support that theory nor do any of the arguements here.
So get off your religion kick and start looking for the true roadblock. I know if they have a problem then it has to be something that the acedemics side of the whole thing isn’t being met. If you still want it bad enough then find out the objection and overcome it, that strategy works in life and in school.

    Tempe12 = lame!

  • awesomeblossom June 3, 2008 at 12:04 am

There have been a lot of stuff about Tempe 12 on The Dirty. Seems to be some mad people.

  • tp October 23, 2008 at 10:59 pm

I saw those comments about Tempe12 too. Tempe12 wonders why they didn’t get an internship? Maybe they should treat their employees and interns with respect.

Wow. Check this out, and read it to the end:
