We were at no shortage of peak Jeff Koons fanfare throughout 2013. And this year is already shaping up to be no different. In six months’ time, Koons will be the final artist to unleash a retrospective at the old Whitney Museum building before that institution moves to its new space. As a kind of ultimate send-off, Koons’ retrospective, his first major New York museum show, will be the first of its scale in the Whitney, occupying almost the entire building.

It’s a particularly deft strategic move on the part of the museum, allowing for the 120 objects in the Koons exhibition to take the place of its permanent collection, as it moves to the new Meatpacking District location. Koons’ retrospective comprises artworks from 1979 to the present, offering a complete time line of this often-controversial artist’s oeuvre.

The retrospective is on display between June 27 and October 19 2014.
