12. SUNY Albany
Location: Albany, N.Y.
Year Built: 1962 (Founded: 1844)
Key Architects: Edward Durell Stone
SUNY Albany has taken a lot of flack for its cold, impersonal campus. Designed by renowned campus architect veteran Edward Durell Stone, the campus falls short...but it all can't be blamed on Stone. The SUNY system doesn't have a great reputation for glorious buildings. Budget constraints truncated Stone's idyllic vision of the space, complete with artfully lit archways and lush green surroundings. Unfortunately, due to this, we'll never know just how beautiful the central New York campus could have been.
