22. Kenny Scharf

Exhibitions: "Kolors" at Paul Kasmin Gallery (April 4 - May 4, 2013), Amerikulture with Tseng Kwong Chi at Eric Firestone Gallery in collaboration with Paul Kasmin Gallery (July 26 - August 11, 2013)

Street artist Kenny Scharf broke headlines this year when he spent 20 hours in two New York City jails after being arrested for spray-painting a wall in Brooklyn. The best part of the story, however, was that the cops were big fans of his work and chatted with Scharf about his art during the arrest.

His short stint in lock-up came right after the opening of his show in Chelsea, an event that included real doughnuts inspired by his works. This year, he also installed a kooky sculpture, Squirtz, at The Standard Hotel in New York and, further from home, painted a decommissioned plane for The Boneyard Project in Arizona, where artists were called upon to transform old jets into works of art. -Leigh Silver
