The Most Important Artists of 2013 (So Far)

24. Anish Kapoor

Exhibitions: "Kapoor in Berlin" at Martin-Gropius-Bau (May 18 - November 24, 2013)

When Anish Kapoor's show opened in Berlin, the British-based artist critiqued Germany's support for the arts in contrast with his home country's ruthless cuts to arts programs. "In short, Britian is fucked," he pronounced to the Guardian's Kate Connolly in May.

His show in Berlin stunned audiences with impressive sculptural works. In one, chunky red wax spewed from a cannon, dressing the gallery wall in a bloody substance. In another, a painted "blood mirror" followed the show's violent theme. Kapoor is known for his creation of the red (which, if you haven't figured out by now, is his favorite color) Orbit Tower at the 2012 London Olympic stadium. He also made headlines with his parody of "Gangnam Style" last November, a video that featured other art world members in support of Ai Weiwei (whose "Gangnam Style" parody was banned in China). -Leigh Silver
