Teacher Wears Same Outfit for 40 Yearbook Photos

Nobody likes picture day at school. It can be hard to find the perfect outfit for every single year. However former physical education teacher Dale Irby had a solution to that problem. He wore the same same polyester shirt and knit sweater vest for 40 years of yearbook photos.

Irby primarily wore athletic attire, as his job required him to. Because he didn't have a large array of formal clothing, he chose the sweater outfit for the first yearbook photo in 1973. Then he wore the same outfit on accident the next year, he tells the Dallas Morning News.

“I was so embarrassed when I got the school pictures back that second year and realized I had worn the very same thing as the first year,” he said.

But his wife Cathy dared him to do it again. Then, it became a tradition. Although fashion is glad to see him go, he will be missed by the school.

“He took his job so seriously in teaching good sportsmanship — both in athletics and in life,”  principal Pam Aitken said. “He taught a lot of kids to be fair and respectful of others. That’s a great legacy to leave.”
