The 30 Most Famous Muses in Art

21. Leigh Bowery

Relationship to: Lucian Freud

Painter Lucian Freud met Leigh Bowery through a mutual friend, artist Cerith Wyn Evans in 1988. The artist had seen the Australian night club personality wearing flamboyant outfits equipped with stilettos, latex body suits, heavy make up, and other fanciful garb. Freud said of Bowery, "I found him perfectly beautiful." Bowery posed for Freud many times over the course of four years, with the artist creating large works that emphasized Bowery's large figure. The way in which Freud captures flesh and facial expressions through the application of textures is often commended.
