Jeanne Duval has been immortalized in Baudelaire's love poetry and in the above painting by Ă‰douard Manet. Most of Duval's works about relationships have to do with the Creole dark-haired beauty, including the popular Black Venus. However, Duval wasn't a favorite of Baudelaire's mother, who thought that she was a slut, an alcoholic, and a gold digger. Some critics agree based on the fact that the poet attempted suicide during the time she was his mistress.
