SFMOMA Wants to Offer Everyone Under 18 Free Admission With New Campaign Goal

As we told you before, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) announced it would be closing on June 2 for almost two years of renovations and expansions. However it looks like they will come back bigger and better than before.

Last night SFMOMA made the announcement that it aims to raise more money for its capital campaign, now shooting for 11 percent more funding (or $55 million). That makes its goal a grand total of $610 million, all dedicated to projects that will strengthen the institution. One change that should excite families is the plan to offer free admission to visitors under 18. Currently only children under 12 enter without charge and regular admission is $18.

It makes sense that SFMOMA would strive for more; 98 percent of its capital campaign goal has been achieved three years ahead of schedule, San Francisco Business Times reports. Also, an anonymous donor has proposed a grant that will match $5 million worth of donations to ensure free visits for kids.

But the SFMOMA isn't only focusing on admissions. The extra funding will also go towards their social media presence, which to be frank, they already are baller at. The money will also help increase the institution's commission program fork works in public places at the museum.

“The increase in the capital campaign goal is a reflection of our belief that we can develop even better access and education programs to share our passion for art with the San Francisco and Bay Area community for generations to come,” the chairman of SFMOMA’s board of trustees said in a press release. “We hope that people from across the community continue to join in our campaign and thus ensure that SFMOMA is open to everyone and remains a leader in collections and exhibitions, an innovator in arts education, and a pioneer in digital interpretation.”
