The 25 Photographers You Should Know

Jonathas de Andrade (Brazil)

I was excited to see Jonathas de Andrade's work in person when I attended The Ungovernables, the 2nd New Museum Triennial, in New York last month. The exhibition featured the Brazilian's installation piece, Ressaca Tropical (Tropical Hangover), which was previously on view in last year's 12th Instanbul Biennial. Ressaca Tropical combines anonymous diary entries that de Andrade found in the trash with over a hundred photographs to create a portrait of a generic Latin American city modeled on his native Recife's failed attempt to embrace Modernism in the 1980s. The photographer also opened a solo exhibition at Marcantonio Vilaca in Rio de Janeiro on March 13.
