Traveling French waiter and self-taught art historian Stephane Breitwieser wanted to create a personal collection of some of the most expensive and revered pieces in the world, but instead of waiting around to earn $1 billion to afford his ambitions, he grabbed his balls and stole the work he wanted. Six years and 239 pieces later, he had amassed a massive collection. Experts speculate he committed one theft every 15 days and manipulating both his girlfriend and his mother as accomplises. Though Breitwieser accumulated one of the most valuable collections of stolen art, he gained further notoriety as the destroyer of it when he was caught in 2001 and shredded, burned, and even tossed more than half of the masterpieces into the Rhone-Rhine canal out of panic.
