For skateboarders, magazine ads are more than just another way to push product and make a check. They're good for that, of course, but skate ads are a cornerstone of the industry. Pre-YouTube, this was the way companies got their new riders out there, put their skaters' best tricks on paper, and hyped upcoming video parts. Skate mags also provided the medium for company design guys to go nuts—the best ads always combined brain-melting tricks with compelling design, irreverent humor, and strong visuals.
