"In the early '90s, many popular art/design T-shirts were being displayed in fashion boutiques in Japan. We felt that the area between contemporary art and subcultures was disappearing, yet the mutual links could not be denied. This prompted us to start working with a variety of new artists and design sources to produce 2K's own T-shirt line.
"Getting started, we made standard business moves: We developed attractive products, created a sales team, found the right manufacturers, controlled production and deliveries, monitored collection of payment, created targeted gross profit, and aimed for a healthy cash flow. Fortunately, our Japan-based parent company provided funds to support the 2K by Gingham business. In terms of getting distribution, it was important to find the right sales representatives, showrooms, and distributors. Also, there are key stores, and we have direct relationships with those buyers. We always try to get feedback about our products and services, be it positive or negative.
"For those looking to start out in the business, first and foremost, frustration is the tip-off. If you have tried to find a product for yourself but you can't find anything, other people are probably looking for it too. Visit trade shows that focus on your market and make sure that your product is competitive and that your price is suitable. Find the right sales people and work with them. Then try to avoid having a huge risk when you start by not carrying too much stock. Produce per customers' orders. Lastly, make sure you are enjoying it."
