Turning Point

DJ Treats keeps his hopes low for a Grammy's comeback.

Announcing the nominees for this year's 50th Annual Grammy Awards does nothing to make the show any more interesting. Not like the music industry's ongoing problems will be solved overnight with an award to 50 Cent, the black sheep of the show, but it's a start. Most of the 50 haters expect him to lose Best Rap Song to Kanye (will it ever stop?), extending his run of losses since '04 for Best New Artist. As ridiculous as this will sound, I'm putting my money on "Ayo Technology" to beat Kanye's "Can't Tell Me Nothing". The Grammy's (white folks) can't get enough of Justin Timberlake, need I say more? This is sure to eat away Kanye's shemagh, that is unless they do him one better by giving him a chance at a performance 3-peat with Daft Punk for "Stronger".

R. Kelly, the king of long form music videos could also surprise whatever audience is left that still watches the show with another redux version of a "Trapped In The Closet" chapter, this time co-starring any of Oprah's favorite adult contemporary Botox patients. But he already did a one-man show at the 2005 VMA's. I doubt the conservative old heads will allow anything as taboo as a story about AIDS, homosexuality, and infidelity shake up their delicate airwaves. Then again, who saw Eminem's collab with Elton "Rocket Man" John coming?

About eight weeks from now, I'll be tuning in to see dreams shattered, and more embarrassment to the music industry. So, in light of Kells' nomination for Best Long Form Music Video, I decided to list some of the best videos that the Grammy's overlooked. And the winner is...

Usher "Rhythm City" 2005

- The sexy Joy Bryant co-stars in this clip from "Red Light" the sexy Joy Bryant co-stars. Pay attention, if you blink you'll miss Superhead's cameo.

Eminem "Stan" 2000

- Still should have gotten award for the 8 minute, Phillip Atwell classic.

Prince "Prince and the Revolution Live!" 1985

Video

- Prince lost the Long Form Music video to Michael Jackson's "Thriller".

"Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em" 1990

-Hammer sheds light on his rocky upbringing in Oakland.

Madonna "Immaculate Collection" 1991

- "Justify My Love" was banned by TV for it's racy content, but was hands-down one of Madonna's greatest hits.

*Michael Jackson had some great videos after the Grammy award-winning "Thriller" like "Bad," directed by Martin Scorcese. But after recieveing the prestigious honor of MTV's Greatest Video In The History of the World, it's been hard to top that. Home // ENTERTAINMENT // FEATURES // Turning Point
