MAGAZINE GRAVEYARD
One Nut
1993-1995 | NYC
Pitch:
A crude black-and-white newsprint 'zine that covered mainstream hip-hop and R&B with an “I don't give a fuck” attitude. Publisher Barry Wade's baby was put together in his mother's crib in Connecticut.
Notable For:
"Confessions of a Gay Rapper," an as-told-to story from the P.O.V. of a gay rapper. Years later, it was revealed to be a hoax.
Death Knell:
When significant contributors like Elliott Wilson and kris ex found steady work from more mainstream mags like CMJ and The Source, respectively, Wade could no long shoulder the editorial and financial burden.
Legacy:
Rap's pretty gay these days, so I guess you could say One Nut called that.
Rating:
If you’re gonna bust one nut, make sure it’s on a gay rapper.
