Hip-Hop Connection
“The World’s Original Rap Magazine”
1988-2008 | United Kingdom
Pitch:
With its premiere issue appearing six months before The Source, HHC can rightfully proclaim itself to be the first hip-hop magazine. During its 20-year, 232-issue run, the British mag went through myriad phases, just like the music it covered. The constant was HHC’s rep for treating mainstream and underground artists with equal, (relatively) unbiased respect.
Notable For:
Ranked the top 100 albums from ’95-’05 in March 1996 issue (Cuban Linx was #1); then, in its final issue (April 2009), enlisted 100 rappers to vote on the G.O.A.T. MC (#3 2Pac; #2 KRS-ONE; #1 Rakim).
Death Knell:
The loss of advertisers, as always.
Legacy:
HHC is now fully digital at http://www.hhcdigital.net/.
Rating:
We give them an “A” for effort and a big, veiny “D” for duration. Cheers, mates!
