Your favorite rapper’s rapper dishes about retirement and his adoration for UGK.

Scarface

Complex: Does that stem from selling records?
Scarface: I mean getting the money that’s “owed.”

Complex: Right I understand. In one of your lyrics on the album, you were talking about being tired of doing verses for free, were you doing that a lot?
Scarface: If that’s the way you wanna put it, yeah.

Complex: Was that on other people’s stuff?
Scarface: That was on my own shit.

Complex: Was that a concern you had with Rap-A-Lot?
Scarface: Yeah. Really.

Complex: So what keeps you recording with Rap-A-Lot and not with Def Jam?
Scarface: It’s gonna be a clash with me and somebody else, because they gonna try to control what I create. I mean everything will work out with Rap-A-Lot, I’m sure, but I’m not gon’ deny niggas that listen to me the opportunity to hear my shit, because I got a personal problem with…not seeing it. I see what happened with all these other groups that had a dispute with the record company and they just stopped putting out albums, and then when they get free from their situation, ain’t nobody checking for them no more. So that was a big ass fear of mine.

Complex: Well, being the marquis artist on Rap-A-Lot, do you feel like you have loyalty to keep recording with them?
Scarface: Ah, we’ll see. If they have the loyalty to keep me there. It ain’t a question of mine, it’s a question of his. My loyalty is not a question.

Complex: Right.
Scarface: J’s loyalty is a question, in my opinion.

Complex: So all of that might change when this album comes out, depending on sales, or your feelings about it?
Scarface: No. No it’s not gonna change. Either we’re together or not.

Complex: Would you consider doing another album with Def Jam if it was there?
Scarface: With Def Jam? Everything is open for discussion right now.

Complex: That album had major commercial success, especially in New York who didn’t really know who you were before and once they heard that, it was the best shit out. What was your creative direction for this album coming off of that?
Scarface: I think Def Jam was the most comfortable Scarface ever, the Def Jam Scarface. I was really loving the way they let me create and they didn’t stand in the way of me being creative. And they didn’t hesitate to cut a check.

Complex: Was retirement ever on your mind?
Scarface: Retirement was never on my mind. Quitting was always…

Complex: What’s the difference between the two, it seems they would be the same.
Scarface: You retire from your job, you quit when you just get tired of the game. Then you quit when you get tired of the “games”.
