The UFC champ talks about his title fight, Tim Sylvia and fans crying themselves to sleep in their GSP Underoos.

Matt Serra
St. Pierre has said that he’s changed a lot of things in his game, that he’s a new and improved GSP. Does that affect you in anyway?
Matt Serra: I don’t know. When I fought him, he cleaned out the division. Now all of a sudden, that wasn’t him! It looked like him. The guy had a friggin’ accent. I don’t know, but hey whatever. If they have somebody that’s the new and improved guy, then that’s the guy I’m going to beat.
What’s your take on fans that say you got lucky in the first fight?
Matt Serra: Yeah, that’s ridiculous. People can think whatever they want. You can’t discredit what I’ve done. I was telling him what I was going to do, that no one’s invincible, that I was able to win this fight. And then I did. So, where is there a controversy? I think that people got upset and they cried themselves to sleep in their GSP Underoos.
Do you think fighting on St. Pierre’s home turf is going to have any effect on you at all?
Matt Serra: Not one bit. That night with 22,000 Canadians booing me…there’s not going to be a place I’d rather be on Earth than right there. “Le boo!” I’m going to be like Chazz Michael Michaels from Blades of Glory. I’m going to be like “Let it rain down on me!” Remember when he was puking in the bag and they’re all booing him? “Let it rain down!”
Tim Sylvia, he caught a lot of flack during his heavyweight reign, do you think you guys finally have a common ground to stand on now when it comes to haters?
Matt Serra: Please, never put me in the same sentence with that big retard ever again. [Laughs] That guy… matter of fact, the only thing I’m going to have in common, is I’m going to have everybody booing me. I’m going to feel like Tim Sylvia when he fights… oh yeah, anywhere. That guy would get booed in his hometown! Listen, if you want to [Laughs], you’re making me laugh. Did you ever see the TV show Blind Date? Those two episodes with Tim Sylvia…did you know he was on that show?
I didn’t catch those.
Matt Serra: He’s like “Duhhhhh, you know, what’s the problem?” And the girl’s like “I just don’t find you attractive.” And he’s like “Duhhhh…” It was awesome! I’m not a big Tim Sylvia fan. I think the guy’s a moron.
Can you think of any reason why the fans never really took to Sylvia?
Matt Serra: I think with Tim Sylvia, the reason why people don’t like him is because he’s a moron. People don’t like me because, I don’t know. Whenever you speak your mind, there will be people that respect it if they agree with you or not, people that agree with you if they love you and like you, or people that just don’t like you or the way your annoying New York accent sounds. That’s where I’m coming from. I got people that really support me and are great, and I got other people that hate me, but I would have it no other way. I don’t give a beep.
Rich Franklin has faced Anderson Silva twice, and suffered two definitive losses. What happens to your mentality as a fighter when can’t get past an opponent?
Matt Serra: I don’t know. All I got to say is thank God I beat Shonie Carter in the rematch. Otherwise you might not be talking to me. I might have killed myself. Am I being too much of an ass? Do you want me to be more serious?
No, I think you’re on the right track, just be your self.
Matt Serra: [Laughs] For better or worse, that’s what I live by, and it’s been doing good for me so far. I got some airtime off it. I think that this is why Matt Hughes says I’m bad for the sport. But fuck him too. [Laughs] Life’s too short and so am I. Fuck it.
