Wiz Kid

Some might say he’s loose with his words, but Gilbert Arenas’ game is airtight. We caught up with “Agent Zero” as he prepares for the new NBA season and the release of 20 unique versions of his Gil II Zero sneaker —62 less than he hoped for. Read up on the new kicks, why buzzer beaters are better than sex, and why he thinks he could run the floor with Kobe. By Joe La Puma

Complex.com:  Alright so there’s 20 different versions of Gil II Zero. How many did you have actual have involvement in?
Gilbert Arenas: Actually all of them have something to do with me.  I came up with all the concepts, but I didn’t have anything to do with the colors.

C:  Functionality-wise, what did you focus on?
Gilbert Arenas:  There’s no such thing as function in the shoe. When me and adidas came with the idea, my whole thing was I wanted my shoe to come out as a street shoe.  You know for kids to come out and wear jeans and a shirt, I don’t want it to be a basketball shoe, because most of the shoes that [adidas] sells are outside kicks. I’m just trying to use outside kicks and make them wearable.

C:  What’s your favorite one out of the 20?
Gilbert Arenas:  This was the first time I actually seen the CRWN. I like the UNDRCRWN shoes because, they’re different.  It just caught my eye when I was looking around.

C:  Do you have any idea what you’re going to wear for the all-star game?
Gilbert Arenas:  Yeah, you know, there’s a secret one that’s going to come from the collection. I don’t know yet, but it’s going be a special edition somewhere in there.

C:  So you mentioned on your blog that only two sneakers were in line with David Stern’s wardrobe code league’s code for uniforms…
Gilbert Arenas:  Yeah I did, but I totally forgot about that.  I don’t wear black shoes. Our team doesn’t wear black shoes on the road. But there’s about 3 or 4 that are in-line.

C:  Your team doesn’t wear black shoes?
Gilbert Arenas:  We don’t wear black shoes. But I’m going to wear them. It’s a fine. I get two warnings first.  It’s a fine, another fine, and then it’s a suspension after that.

C:  What are your thoughts on uniform standards, shoe-wise?
Gilbert Arenas:  It’s a controlled league. So I know there are going to be standards because it’s a team thing. But, you know, you got to play by the rules sometimes. So if he [David Stern] doesn’t bring up a suspension, then I’ll take the fine.

C:  Do you make it a point for the sneakers to be limited or is that more of an adidas thing?
Gilbert Arenas:  Both.  You want the hype behind it.  You want them selling out so people can ask for more. You want to try something different because since Jordan there was nothing else to compete in that sales market where people are going to rush to the stores. That’s what adidas and me are trying to do.
