Not Your Average Lightweight

Would you have gone into the The Ultimate Fighter with the same attitude if you had fought more than a couple of amateur tough man fights?
Corey Hill: It’s kind of weird, because I got on the show and a part of me was like “Wow, those guys I’ve been fighting were bums compared to these guys.” But then, I think I made way too much of the show instead of just having fun. Once I have fun, that’s when I perform my best in anything. It was like, OK, do I want to be this guy that’s like “Are these guys that much better than me, technique-wise?” I got on the show and I fought Robert, and there was a brief second in that fight – I tell everybody, because I’m just an honest guy – but there was brief second in that fight when he hit me. He can’t see it because it’s so fast, but he hit me and for two seconds I honest to God was like “Corey, is this what you really want to be doing?”

Yeah, sounds like snowboarding might be a safer option in Colorado.
Corey Hill: [laughs] You know what? I don’t know about that man.

You snowboard? What do you ride?
Corey Hill: Anybody’s snowboard that I can use for free [laughs]. I don’t have any gear like that. But I’ll borrow a snowboard and I’ll do it all the way home. I’ll crash, but hey [laughs] that’s the point of trying.

But you think the Octagon is a safer place than a half-pipe?
Corey Hill: I tell people all the time, the Octagon looks so dangerous, but it’s really very hard for you to get hurt in there. It sounds easier, like ‘OK. I can hold this guy down and beat him up.’ It’s easier said than done. When you get on top of someone and he’s grabbing your hand and you’re trying to hold him, it’s like what do I punch with? So you don’t really get hit. I’ve been fortunate enough not to get hit with too many strikes, so far so good.
