It'd be hard to convince Mya Harrison that family and business don't mix. After all, her father was instrumental in her platinum success as a teenager. But when her parents, who were managing her, went through an acrimonious divorce in 1998, she was forced to choose new management. "My dad took it very personally," recalls the Jamaican-American and Italian singer, now 27. "My family fell apart and it was psychotic."
After the split, the Washington, D.C. native won a Grammy for "Lady Marmalade" and landed acting roles in Chicago and Shall We Dance?, but she missed her family professionally. "People do you dirty sometimes and steal things," she says. "A lot had to do with my father not being around." After 2003's Moodring sold poorly, she left Interscope for Motown. Now her father is back as her manager and her mother as her accountant. "My energy is totally different," says Mya, "I feel like I have control and I'm a grown woman now." Showing her maturity, she co-wrote all of her fourth album, Liberation.
But even with her family stable again, drama lingers. After appearing in Game's video for "Dreams" last year, rumors circulated that they were dating, which she denies. Then, she became 50's trump card for "Not Rich, Still Lying" (Game Diss). "[50] claimed to have slept with me and that's totally incorrect," she says. "If that's how you choose to succeed, then karma's a bitch. I don't have time for that small bullshit."
Especially now that she's all grown up.
