You've seen the cat before and can place his face: Wasn't he the dude in that flick, you know, that one? Odds are, if you are thinking it was him, it was. As Timo in Coach Carter, Rudy in The Rookie, and Spanish in Old School, Rick Gonzalez, the pride of Bushwick, Brooklyn, takes supporting parts and turns them into a manifestation of who he is.
"I bring my own thing to it and embrace who I am, which is culture and hip-hop," says Gonzalez, adding that staying true to his roots has its perks. "Like Spanish in Old School: Because it's a cult film, people know each character personally. If I'm at a club, I always get a free drink. I looked at it like it was a small role and it was just me working, but sure enough, the smallest role in Old School is the biggest thing to those fans."
When asked about his Hollywood plan, Gonzalez puts it succinctly: "Hollywood embracing me as a leading actor," he says. "To get a shot to be in front of the screen and do my thing. I'm pleased with the way my career is going because it's so different. I thank God, I'm pretty lucky and focused, and I work hard. It's about being true to doing different things that call upon you to be a different character every time. I hope that people see that and embrace the culture, and that Hollywood will embrace it, too."
WHERE YOU CAN SEE HIM NEXT: As punk rock guitar legend Pat Smear in What We Do Is Secret, and as "Stone" in the horror thriller Pulse.
