JEFFREY DEITCH THE ART VISIONARY

>“Artists and Prostitutes” is just the latest show from collector Jeffrey Deitch, the sometimes controversial but always innovative gallery owner behind Deitch Projects in New York’s SoHo, as well as the Art Production Fund. Concerned with contemporary identity and the “fundamental difference in how people construct their identity from how they did 40 years ago,” his exhibits and artists often reflect an intersection of fashion, music, film and literature. Recent exhibits have featured photographers like David LaChapelle and Steven Klein as well as contemporary painters like Hernan Bas and writer JT LeRoy. A mysterious, low–key character, Deitch avoids the spotlight and maneuvers from behind the scenes. He does, however, possess an uncanny knack for discovering and nurturing the most forward thinking contemporary and cool talent today.
