HIROSHI FUJIWARA
THE STREETWEAR GURU
You can’t touch the kind of cool this god of Japanese streetwear culture has achieved. The mysterious DJ and clothing designer has influenced A Bathing Ape’s Nigo (whose adopted name means “number two,” referring to his resemblance and desire to be like Fujiwara); consulted for Nike; made a Be@rbrick toy for Medicom; and collaborated with Eric Clapton on a black Martin acoustic guitar. It’s hard to know exactly what Fujiwara’s capable of as a clothing and sneaker designer since most of his work is collaborative and he doesn’t publicize it, but according to a 2002 article in
The New Yorker, he sold off all of his possessions in an Internet auction, including a nylon jacket that went for about $8,500. Other than that, Fujiwara’s main achievement seems to be staying under the radar while looming as a meteorite for those who care about and are responsible for the dopest streetwear, music and vinyl figures out there.
