Mississippi–born, Philly–based producer and DJ Diplo (né Wes Pentz) has been getting white folks crunk as half of the zeitgeist DJ duo Hollertronix since 2002. He’s done so by remixing far–flung regional music, like Houston rap anthem “Still Tippin’,” with more rock–friendly fare like PJ Harvey—and knocking down a number of cultural walls in the process. And that’s not all: After releasing a solo debut in ’ 04, Diplo’s rep skyrocketed among the trendy glitterati when word leaked that he’d hooked up with hot Sri Lankan toaster M.I.A., and together expanded hip–hop’s vernacular. Now with his name in everyone’s mouth, Diplo is poised to crack the mainstream piñata while serving up flares of provincial ass–shaking. This is the real world music.
